Tuure Leppänen

About

Tuure Leppänen (b.1999) is a Helsinki-based visual artist working with lens-based art. In his work, themes of memory, lived experience and feelings of belonging and disconnect are studied with a photographic gaze. Leppänen’s practice departs from theoretical writing and discourse around photography. By adapting and appropriating the medium’s documentary character, he aims to expand the scope of human experience beyond the body’s immediate senses and vicinity. A question recurs throughout his work: How do machines affect the way we remember the past, experience visual contemporaneity and head towards the future?

Leppänen is pursuing a Master’s degree at The Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki, having also attended Akademie der Bildenden Künste Wien. His works have been exhibited in galleries and off-site venues in and around Helsinki, as well as internationally. In 2022, a collaborative residency project with Xiao Zhiyu, and hosted by sabl.live, was exhibited in Espace Arlaud, Lausanne. He has made collaborative works with Sheung Yiu and shown at WMA Space, Hong Kong in 2024.
